Tower Bridge Road is an 180,000 sqft, mixed-use scheme offering a mix of residential workspace and ground floor retail, cafes and restaurants. A curvilinear building form will be introduced to unify three existing buildings to creatively address the variances in floor levels between each building. Importantly, raw and robust materials will be employed to ensure the redevelopment is sympathetic to the grain and materiality of Old Bermondsey to which the proposed public square connects.
In addition to the thoughtful architectural components that deliver the scheme’s retail spaces, boutique offices and residences, the design proposal makes a civic contribution to the Southwark Borough as it unlocks and enables green pedestrian linkage from the St Mary Magdalen Churchyard gardens to City Hall that allows for public thoroughfare.
A new civic square will be created at the heart of the development activated by restaurants, cafes and commercial uses. This square is scaled to be complimentary to the grain of nearby Old Bermondsey. It opens up the important walk to the river and provides a new link from Bermondsey High Street to Tower Bridge Road, enhancing connectivity of the neighbourhood. Additionally, the landscape from the adjacent St Mary Magdalen Gardens is drawn deep into the development and the greenery wrapping the balconies fronting the new square will in effect be a vertical landscape that will change with the seasons.
