The NewActon precinct is mixed use – residential, commercial, hospitality and retail – and is centred on a heritage building that once housed many of the city’s public servants and politicians. The design aims to neutralise potentially competing influences such as the impact of the heritage building, the current and future nature of urbanity in Canberra, the interrelationships between different uses and the balance between public and private space. The landscape is intrinsic to the design, with external rooms created from what would otherwise have been merely space between buildings.
