AFK Submits Plans For ‘Gorgeous’ £137m Southwark Mixed-use Scheme

London and Australia-based Arney Fender Katsalidis (AFK) has submitted plans for a 16,720m2 mixed-use scheme at 151-157 Tower Bridge Road.

The practice saw off Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to land the scheme, which is backed by developer First Base and aims to ‘introduce a curved form’ to unify three existing buildings on the Southwark site.

Set to start on site in July 2017, the £137 million project includes 69 homes and 137 apart hotel units.

A new civic square with restaurants, cafés, shops and offices will be built as part of the scheme, recreating a public link from Bermondsey to the river Thames.

AFK chief executive Earle Arney said: ‘We are delighted with our collaboration with First Base and the design vision we share for Southwark.

’[This scheme] will be a gorgeous project.’

He added: ’Tower Bridge Road is a project of urban repair at both the architectural and urban scale. Existing structures are adaptively reused, which elevate the sustainability of the development while raw and robust materials are employed to connect with the warehouse grain of Old Bermondsey.

’A new square at the heart of the development creates a civic heart for the local community and the potential of a green pedestrian spine linking St Mary Magdalen Churchyard Gardens to City Hall is established for the Borough. We look forward to developing the designs and contributing positively to this wonderful neighbourhood.’


The project replaces an apart-hotel scheme drawn up by Weston Williamson for 153-157 Tower Bridge Road that was approved in 2009.
